Financial Literacy

Corazón conducts financial literacy workshops throughout the year helping residents start a savings plan, open a bank account, understand the American financial system, and how to build credit. For those we serve, it is critical to understand the difference between debit and credit cards, learn how to write a check, and the importance of developing a strong foundation in financial literacy. This programming covers a variety of topics for an adult audience and is often paired with financial incentives from partner organizations. Throughout tax season, we host a free tax preparation site as part of the Earn It! Keep It! Save It! Coalition in partnership with United Way of the Wine Country. Our trained staff of volunteer tax preparers assist low income residents with their tax preparation on-site at the Corazón Resource Center.

Corazón offers free referrals to legal services and pro-bono attorney services in the areas of tenant-landlord disputes, employment, workers compensation, personal injury, immigration, business, estate planning and family law. Through one-on-one consultation at our resource center or during our legal clinics, we connect residents with experts in their field who are able to advise and often take on our client’s cases as pro-bono clients in their respective practice areas.

As an advocate for the community, Corazón’s staff works with local housing developers to conduct housing workshops and rental fairs for those seeking housing. When problems arise with housing providers or landlords, Corazón is able to intervene and advocate on behalf of residents. Our “Rent Ready” workshops in partnership with Catholic Charities and Burbank Housing, help prospective tenants know what will be expected from them in the application process and gives an opportunity for applicants to prepare their paperwork before the applications are due. Workshops are held in Spanish and English and applications can be reviewed and submitted at the workshop.

We offer citizenship classes and “Know Your Rights” trainings throughout the year in conjunction with legal clinics that allow residents to seek legal counsel from practicing immigration attorneys. Our quarterly immigration law clinics are held in Healdsburg and attorneys from the Bay Area are on hand to meet with residents, answer questions and review the status of any pending applications. Our clinics and citizenship classes have results in several residents becoming U.S. citizens and many other applicants have been eligible for relief.
