Adult Ed Classes Move Online

Updated: Apr 15

Last week, Corazón was pleased to see the faces of many of our adult education students online for the first time! Just like at schools and colleges around the world, our Healdsburg students enrolled in classes at Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma County Adult Education are in the process of moving to online learning. Currently Corazón has dozens of adult students learning to use computers, English as a second language and financial literacy, or preparing to take their GED, early childhood care provider licensing and studying for their citizenship naturalization exams. Typically these classes meet at the City of Healdsburg’s Community Center, where we’re also able to provide childcare for our students. Now, due to COVID-19, we’re no longer able to meet in person, but we’re working to keep as many of these students on track to achieve their goals as possible. With the support of the Santa Rosa Junior College, the ESL, childcare provider workforce classes and computer classes are now meeting online and we’re in the process of getting the GED class online as well. The transition has been challenging for many students who either don’t have access to a computer or internet at home or are uncomfortable using a computer. Internet hotspots are in short supply and internet service providers are working through a backlog of appointments to set up new internet connections. The SRJC has generously loaned many student computers so that they can complete their courses online. Despite significant setbacks this year including both the mandatory evacuations during the Kincade Fire and now the Shelter-in-Place order and COVID-19 pandemic, we have two more hard working students set to complete their GED this Spring. They will join a group of over a dozen fellow GED graduates who have completed their high school equivalency diploma with Corazón Healdsburg since the program first started in 2018. Several other students are close, and we are providing them with as much support as possible. As always, our student support staff endeavor to be as available as possible through phone, video calls and social media. Adult education is central to Corazón’s mission of ending cycles of poverty and empowering the Latinx community in northern Sonoma County. Many of our students have faced barriers to traditional education. COVID-19 presents a new obstacle, one we’re having to create innovative solutions to overcome.
