Center of Belonging in the Making

The community-led Multicultural Wellness Center Project at Healdsburg’s Abel de Luna Community Center

Over the past several years, Corazón Healdsburg has had the privilege of partnering with the City of Healdsburg and the Healthcare Foundation Northern Sonoma County to help shape a shared vision for the future of our community center. In 2024, Corazón joined a community-driven planning process for what is now emerging as the Healdsburg Multicultural Center, located at the recently renamed Abel De Luna Community Center, the City-owned multipurpose campus where Corazón’s offices are based. Through surveys, listening sessions, and design workshops facilitated with partners including On the Margins and Alliance Medical Center, more than 129 residents helped articulate a vision for a welcoming space rooted in belonging. That process produced ten “Design Mandates” that now guide plans for a center where residents can gather, access services, celebrate culture, and strengthen community ties.

With funding support from the County of Sonoma and the City of Healdsburg, the vision developed by residents is beginning to move from design to reality. For Corazón, the Multicultural Center represents much more than a refurbished building. We see it as an investment in community leadership and well-being, cultural pride, and shared belonging. The Center will be a place where families across northern Sonoma County can connect more deeply with resources, programs, and one another in dignity, safety, and a sense of shared ownership.

Next steps

Now, we are entering the next phase of this collaborative effort. Beginning this spring, Corazón and our partners will host a new round of community design sessions to help bring the vision to life. These gatherings will share what we’ve learned from earlier conversations and invite neighbors to help shape what comes next, including the formation of a Design Advisory Committee that will guide early improvements to the space, such as community-designed murals and other beautification projects. This work reflects what Corazón strives for in all of our programs: strengthening the social fabric of our community by creating spaces where residents themselves shape their own future.
